Practical Applications of chatGPT in Localization

When we use an 'act as' prompt, we’re inviting GPT to simulate the role we want it to take on. For example, I’ve used prompts like this to include specific GPT roles, as I find them quite useful for certain tasks.

-              Translation Reviewer
"Act as a senior localization specialist reviewing a translation from English to [target language]. Point out inconsistencies, grammatical errors, or areas that could be culturally misinterpreted. Explain your reasoning for any recommended changes."

-              Content Creator Preparing for Localization
"Act as a content creator who needs to prepare source material for localization. What changes or adjustments should be made to ensure the content is easily translatable and culturally adaptable? Identify problematic sections and suggest revisions."

-              Cultural Consultant
"You are a cultural consultant for a localization team working on adapting a video game for the [target language] market. Review the in-game dialogue and suggest changes to make the language and cultural references more relevant to the local audience."

The role of ‘act as Devil’s Advocate’ is very interesting because it allows me to prepare much better for certain situations. And what’s even better, it gives me scenarios that either wouldn’t occur to me or that it generates much faster than I would be able to. That’s where I find the beauty of chatGPT—not as a replacement for what I do, but as a complement.

Below, I’ve included a series of prompts we can use to prepare in areas related to budgeting, resources, stakeholder management, and inclusivity.

In the end, this Devil’s Advocate idea can be used in multiple scenarios. What I’m showing below is just a sample of all the possibilities that chatGPT opens up for us.

 Conclusion

We’ve often heard the saying, “Fail to plan, plan to fail,” and the truth is that with chatGPT, planning is easier than ever.

With the ability to simulate scenarios, anticipate challenges, and serve as a brainstorming Localization buddy, chatGPT allows us to approach planning with more precision and confidence. Whether it’s preparing to justify an increase in localization budgets, outlining a strategy to request additional time for LQA, or developing approaches to manage stakeholder expectations, chatGPT offers a dynamic and flexible tool that helps us think ahead, address potential obstacles and refine our ideas.

So why not give it a try and see how chatGPT can become your Localization buddy ally in smarter planning?
